Our company is a technology consultancy that primarily deals with software development. Our typical projects are relatively small in scope, typically involving custom solutions for very specific tasks and problems encountered by our clients. As such, this branding exercise is wide open for ideas, not merely limited to the sleek high-tech look of many technology companies.
The following attributes apply to our ethos: Wise in our ways, Masters of our craft, Playful in life.
Our clients are US-based and tend to be from the non-tech world with a need to solve technology-related problems; for example, law firms requiring help with digital forensics, or perhaps non-profits seeking automation and data harnessing for the enhancement of their online presence.
We tend to already know our clients via social contact and prior experience; projects generally arise during casual conversation; given that, there is no particular need to project a 'stodgy' or overly serious brand, so long as the result is a beautiful design.
A logo that includes "The Toadstool" as part of the design, for use in letterhead and web pages. It would be nice if a graphics-only version were available as well for symbolic branding. An acceptable variation would be just "Toadstool", without the 'The', if including it proves to be problematic from a design perspective.
The following ideas have occurred to us, but we are open to others:
1) Toad. We love toads. Either as sleek and iconic representation that reflects the technological nature of our business, or as a more complex version that embodies the attributes mentioned above, wise, masterful, playful. The result should not be overly cartoonish. And remember, a toad is not a frog! Frogs hop. Toads stroll.
2) Toadstool. A wide-brimmed mushroom (perhaps even integrated as the 'T') seems to have potential.
Some shade of green should be present (earthy green would be nice, but is not strictly required -- if vivid seems to be the way to go, then vivid we go).

We've attached a picture of the owner's pet toad (he is a packman frog, actually, but don't tell him that). It is not necessary to use this image or look in the design, but perhaps it will serve as inspiration.
