‘Big Dreams’ is a blast from the past. In the hot English summer of `65, best friends, Lily Davis and Jo Price, are enjoying the buzz of the swinging sixties. They adore The Rolling Stones, singing along with the pirate ship, Radio Caroline and mini-skirts. Jo’s enjoying sex but Lily not wanting the risk of pregnancy, waits to be eligible for the new birth control pill at sixteen. It’s all a lark, seeing The Kinks and The Hollies at the pub then riding pillion on motorbikes down the A21 to Hastings beach at midnight. Lily has found new weekend freedom from her violent father by saying she’s staying at Jo’s.
They plan to move Paris and live an amazing life as soon as they leave school. Jo is secretly mad about a boy called Tom Bennett. Trouble starts when Tom falls madly in love with Lily. He pursues Lily for months, she avoids him, not wanting to upset her friend.
One night feeling lonely as Jo is with Tom’s brother, Lily; feeling flattered by Tom’s unwavering attention, succumbs to his love and has sex with him. In shock and disbelief, she finds she’s pregnant. Not able to tell a soul, she books into a Home for unmarried mothers to have her baby adopted like thousands of girls have done before her. She tells Tom and he asks her to marry him. Lily refuses to see him again.
The night before Lily goes into the Home, there is a knock at the front door. Lily, now huge and six months pregnant, goes to answer it. A detective tells her they are charging Tom with carnal knowledge. She tells him she won’t prosecute. He smugly tells her that it’s out of her hands now as there are two girls under sixteen pregnant by him. She feels like she’s been punched as she knows in her gut it’s Jo.
Feeling betrayed by Tom and Jo, Lily endures misery and despair in the cruel and draconian Home. She ignores Tom’s letters and is abandoned by Jo.
A week before Lily’s baby is due, Jo visits and gloats that she’s having Tom’s baby and will marry him. Rage smashes through Lily’s apathy and depression. She writes to Tom telling him she’s angry that his love meant so little but says he can visit her in the hospital when their baby is born if he wants.
After Lily endures a frightening eighteen-hour labour, Tom rushes into the ward and beams with love as he looks down at his daughter. Searching Lily’s eyes, with tears in his own, he asks her to marry him. Her heart has opened with pure love as she cradles the baby she’s now longing to keep. Knowing now that he still loves her, she says ‘yes.’
