The cover of an ebook (and if possible the cover for a published paper back as well). It is a memoir about a young girls struggle to survive living in a home where the mother is mentally ill. At 4 she (me- its a true story) watches her mother take an overdose of sleeping pills, Mom is in and out of mental institutions and the book describes one scene when I visit her in the mental institution. I(I'm 9) What I see makes me more compassionate for people with disabilities and mental illness. In the sixties, talking about mental illness was taboo and Mom's mental illness was a family secret that I wasn't to share. One day Mom rode on the bus with me to avoid being killed by a man across the street and sat in the chair behind mine. The teacher called me out and asked me why my mother was in class .I had to tell her that my mother was "sick in the head" because I didn't know any other word for it. (She is paranoid schizophrenic)
It is my faith that kept me grounded but I hid my faith because my father and brother thought anyone who believed in God was sick in the head. After high school, I left for college and broke away from the dysfunction even though my father didn't think women needed a college education.
The book takes place primarily in the 60s. I have played with the idea of a girl in shadows looking out the window. The memoir is written like a novel, more than a narrative memoir. Even though it has a dark mood, it is inspirational in that I eventually figure out its okay not to be normal. The book has a feel similar to Glass Castle or Liars club but it is not as much narrative and it reads like a novel. Readers have described it as Powerful and riveting. It makes them laugh and cry. I want people to be drawn to the cover and title.
I have a couple titles that I'm using for cover design purposes, Chasing Normal (with subtitle- A Memoir about a child's (young girls?) struggle to survive in a home tormented by mental illness); or Running from Shadows- A memoir about a child's struggle to survive in a home tormented by mental illness). Or "Escape from Shame"- with same subtitle. I would like my name on the front - Linda Schoonover.
