Ella Voss grew up in Germany and has lived in Switzerland, the UK and India. Now living in Munich, Germany, her creative soul still speaks English. She has written numerous short stories on love and life, Like a Fox to a Swallow is her first novel.
The novel is told from the perspective of two (seemingly) different women: Alma Carneggio, wife of an Italian industrial aristocrat, and Helen Kings, a hard-working single mum living in London.
Alma’s world falls apart when her only son Luca, starts drifting from the family and then fathers an illegitimate child - Helen's daughter Emmy. Helen is forced to keep her distance from the family to avoid a scandal. Short after Emmy's birth, Luca dies in a mysterious car accident. Despite the ban, Helen sends Alma a picture of Emmy every year, as a reminder of their existence. Seventeen years later, when her husband dies from a heart attack, Alma finally writes to Emmy.
Helen, to the outside world a functioning working mom, equally dwells on memories and blames Alma for her loneliness. Alma’s letters to Emmy after so many years are an affront to her. She hides them, despite Emmy’s desire to learn about her father.
It takes a new friend for Alma and a new love for Helen, to make both realize that their struggle for social acceptance has harmed their loved ones. They realize: The road to redemption, after all those years, still lies with the other.
When Emmy discovers the letters, she runs away. Alma and Helen finally team up to find Emmy.

My novel is called „Like a Fox to a Swallow“ and qualifies as women’s literary fiction, targeting women from 35 to 60. It is not exactly chick-lit, the style of the writing is quiet lyrical and also funny at times. On a book shelf it would be somewhere between Tessa Hadley (the Past) and Gail Honeyman (Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine).
The novel starts for both characters in a rather dark/depressed mood and ends on a much lighter tone – though nobody gets married in the end 😊.
The fox and the swallow are two symbolic animals which appear throughout the novel. The fox (always a London City fox) stands for the somewhat predatory desires of a lover, such as the need for validation, status, and social security. The swallow (only appearing in the Milanese countryside) stands for pure emotion and freedom, respect for the others‘ need to breath and roam free. Both characters learn in the course of the novel to separate their desires and needs from the needs of others, and to love nonetheless, even if not everything is going your way.
One idea I had was to have the cover in a blue colour, merging from a deep dark blue or royal blue to a light sky blue colour. An image of a fox could sit in the lower left corner, morphing into a swallow which flies into the sky. It shouldn’t look like a kid’s book of course, but I thought it might incite interest.
I have also collected some images online (there might be © on them!) which I could imagine to be part of the cover. Many novels in my genre have „floral covers“ (see attachment of „Five Feet Apart“ ), which I could also imagine, if it is not too „cheesy“/chick-lit-like but somewhat interesting!
So that was a lot of information 😊 Obviously I am not dead-set on a certain design, not even on the colours of blue and orange. What matters to me ist hat it looks really professional and incites interest. This is the first big project that I publish and the cover is one of the main marketing tools.
Thanks so much for your help!
